Test you detector once a week. Push the button or blow smoke into the detector. Clean your detector at least twice a year. Vaccum out the dust. Replace your batteries when time changes in the spring and fall and replace the detector when the detector fails after adding a new battery.

Remember these tips and it could save you and your family life.  Also be sure that your family has an escape plan and that everyone knows where to meet if there is a fire in your home.
